After the Vinitaly 2009 great success, Cantina Tollo continues to promote the places of silence
Hall 11 Stand G2 Friday 9 and Saturday 10 from 12.30 to 15.00.
At Vinitaly everybody talks about new wines, wines to give a prize and wine labels, differently Cantina Tollo, wants the journalists and the people to know a less known and more humble but fascinating Abruzzo. During the fair, on Friday and Saturday, from 12.30 to 15.30, with elegance, Cantina Tollo will reveal the most beautiful places of the territory through the simplicity of poor but spectacular "monuments”: the shepherds’ caves and the hermitages of the Maiella mountains. The event will be an opportunity to present the tour that at the beginning of the summer will permit the journalists to know these natural monuments, following some less crowded itineraries. Although the hermitages are very interesting, the caves used by shepherds are a unique and curious aspect of the Maiella mountain. Hermitages and caves are closely linked one another. Both are places of the spirit: the shepherds carved on the walls of the caves some religious symbols, that became also a place of prayer. Caves date back to Roman times and many of them, once abandoned, became hermitages as well as, sometimes, some abandoned hermitages became shelters for the shepherds. Shepherds’ life, like the hermits’ one, passed slowly into the wild and the food was Spartan. At the end of the summer, when the shepherds went back home, their wives used to cook “The meal of the feast” made of some specialties such as the "Papera muta" (dumb duck), the "timballino dei pastori"(a special homemade stuffed pasta) and " fave e piselli” (broad beans and peas). These three dishes will be presented by Cantina Tollo and served with the wines Hedos
Cerasuolo DOC, Colle Secco DOC Riserva, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo doc, a new wine from Vinitaly. Collesecco Riserva is characterized by a typical bottle with a crooked neck and is made from old vineyards, aged between 30 and 35 years. Ageing lasts 30 months, 24 in French oak barrels of 225 litres used for the second time and 6 months in bottle.
The traditional recipes will be prepared by the FIC from Pescara. Mr. Edoardo Micati, writer and scholar of the places of the Maiella and of the cuisine of silence will tell short anecdotes on these two issues. For example what was a shepherd’s life like and how he “conquered” his cave, or what the shepherds’ wives brought to their husbands on mule back. Mr. Micati will also talk about the beautiful hermitage of San Giovanni all'Orfento, where you can enter only crawling on a cliff overlooking the void. For a few minutes, the journalists can leave the frantic atmosphere of the fair and enjoy silence. Who would have thought that Vinitaly could become an opportunity to find oneself? Cantina Tollo has been able to.
Vinitaly will be an opportunity to celebrate of Cantina Tollo’s 50 years that, at the beginning of the summer, will organize a surprising and original event.
