Large Slavonian oak casks and barrels, alongside modern facilities for maturing processes, characterise a wine cellar which has always played a starring role in the Abruzzo wine culture.

A collective history.

Cantina Tollo was founded in 1960, when the Abruzzo countryside
had depopulated once again and many Italians had left the country in search of a better future. Our fathers on the other hand, winemakers for generations, decided to stay in the vineyards, creating Cantina Tollo.

Playing a leading role in the sixties and seventies in an exciting period for winemaking which brought the Abruzzo region to life, Cantina Tollo played an active part in helping to bring about a radical change in the local wine-growing landscape. While there was a fall in production around Teramo and L’Aquila, the areas occupied by vineyards in the Chieti province grew little by little, especially in Tollo, which became a real “City of Wine”.

Cantina Tollo has also had an important part to play in the process of regulation, initiatives for the protection of regional wines and quality improvement programmes for grapes and winemaking techniques. Today, it is one of the most important and established businesses in the Italian winemaking industry. With a presence in all countries of the European Union, in North America and in the Far East, it exports 35% of its production, with particular attention to the emerging markets of Russia, India and China.

The ageing facilities located in Tollo comprise large Slavonian oak casks and barrels alongside vitrified cement tanks, nowadays considered the best for ageing. Passion, commitment and shared values have guided Cantina Tollo at every turn in its history, and continue to accompany it in its successes.

Passione, impegno e valori condivisi hanno guidato Cantina Tollo in ogni snodo della sua storia e continuano ad accompagnarne i successi.

The winemaking team

Riccardo Brighigna leads the Cantina Tollo wine production team, made up of oenologists Daniele Ferrante and Enrico Mucci, and agronomist Antonio Sitti. Born in Umbria but with Abruzzo as his adopted home, Riccardo Brighigna received the Cangrande Medal for winemaking in 2013 – the prestigious recognition awarded by Vinitaly, the most important Italian trade fair in the world of wine – for his contribution to the development of viticulture and the enhancement of Italian oenology. Voted twice (2005 and 2012) “Oenologist of the Year” by the Abruzzo branch
of the Italian Sommelier Association, he is more than just a reference point in the industry. The choice, made some decades ago, only to work
in the Abruzzo region is linked to the belief that “to achieve convincing results, it is essential to experience the land and follow the vines day by day, interpreting the signals that nature sends us”. Pioneer in Abruzzo
in the technique of skin fermented white wine – applied for the first time to C’Incanta, Cantina Tollo’s Trebbiano which won the Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri award – he is passionate about authentic wines that can faithfully express the characteristics of the vineyard in a sustainable way.

Quality and safety

Cantina Tollo was awarded the title of Producer of the Year in 2010 (Mundus Vini) and, in the same year, was designated Best European Coop-Winery by the German magazine Weinwirtschaft; recognitions which are on top of the dozens of prizes awarded to its wines.

In terms of the quality of its internal procedures, it is important to note that Cantina Tollo has obtained the following certifications: quality management system certification UNI En ISO 9001:2008; food safety certification UNI EN ISO 22000:2005; environmental management system certification UNI EN ISO 14001:2004.
