Cantina Tollo’s wines have their roots in a territory with a vocation for grape growing in which the sun, gentle breezes from the Adriatic Sea and winds from the Maiella mountains create an ideal microclimate. Abruzzo, the so-called “green region” of Europe, offers the enotourist unique and spectacular itineraries enabling him to rediscover nature in enchanting places and experience the enogastronomical traditions of a territory with a thousand faces. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Cerasuolo, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo and Pecorino (an autochthonous wine) can be appreciated more if you know the territory from which they came.
After all history and nature have always conditioned the work of farmers and fisherman who have to adapt their lives to what the territory provides. For years Cantina Tollo have set themselves the objective of showing us the most beautiful places in Abruzzo like the Celestinian hermitages on the Maiella (well and truly places of the spirit) and the “trabocchi” on the coast near Fossacesia. As well as its natural splendours, the Maiella, the mountain symbol of Abruzzo, also boasts numerous hermitages, built in the eighth century by Pietro Angeleri, who later became Pope Celestine V.
These Spartan but enchanting places of meditation and prayer are situated in areas of the mountain of breathtaking beauty, where nature is virtually impenetrable. After centuries of neglect, the hermitages have been rediscovered by religious tourism, a phenomenon that is becoming more and more popular. One of the most fascinating traditions of the region is the “trabocchi”: an ancient fishing method suspended between the land and the sea, carried out on wooden structures built on piles in the sea and connected to the mainland by a long narrow gangway. The people that built them were neither fishermen nor farmers but lived by exchanging their meager catch of fish for the fruits of the earth.
Situated mainly along the “teatina” coast, the “trabocchi” have been made famous by the “Cala Lenta” iniziative organized by the Abruzzo Slow Food association. Cantina Tollo wishes to present its wines through the humblest parts of Abruzzo unknown to travellers yet rich in splendour. Places of silence and meditation, with a strong connection between man and nature, where the traveller can discover breathtaking scenery and unique gastronomical traditions.
