GOLD MEDAL FOR CANTINA TOLLO'S CAGIOLO
Cagiolo, a wine which has been collecting accolades for 16 years, has won the gold medal at the Vinitaly international wine contest 2008.
Only three other Abruzzo wineries received awards.
A 100% Abruzzo doc, Cantina Tollo's 2004 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC has been awarded one of the most sought after prizes at the Vinitaly international wine contest: a gold medal in the category of denomination of origin wines from 4 to 6 years of ageing.
A great achievement which enables Montepulciano d'Abruzzo to take its rightful place in the Hall of Fame of the Great Wines.
This prize is an acknowledgement for all the work done by our winery and the whole territory, says Giancarlo Di Ruscio, the director of the cantina it means that Montepulciano d'Abruzzo can now compete with the finest national and international wines.
It is even more satisfying to achieve this result with one of the winery's historical wines, a wine first produced 16 years ago which won first prize on its debut in the Banco d'Assaggio at Torgiana, at that time the most important wine contest.
Hence we can rightly say that Cagiolo was a born winner. Cagiolo was created to be an innovative wine: it was in fact the first wine in Abruzzo to be refined in barriques.
Other innovations followed, enabling the wine to continue to collect important accolades like, for example, the Gold Medal which it won at Vinitaly two years ago.
Although Cagiolo was created 16 years ago its constant evolution in response to market changes means that today it is still in fashion and very much a winner.
With this prize cantina Tollo, elected Winery of the Year 2008 by the Gambero Rosso's Almanac of Fine Drinking, receives further confirmation for all the hard work it has done over the years, work which gives the upmost importance to the controlling of the production process and the contribution of its members, the cantina's true resource.
For this reason the winery has introduced the Advanced Vineyard project, a retribution system based on the quality of the grapes produced rather than the quality and the creation of a prize for the Member of the Year, the grower who succeeds in producing the highest quality grapes.
